Organize Your Storage Space

Don’t let your storage unit look like this:

This storage unit needs organizing.

A little planning will save you a lot of mess.

Make a list as you pack; it will let you know where to find the things you need later.  Give each box or container a number.  If you’re re-using boxes that have a lot of writing on them, use stick-on labels to make your numbers stand out.  You can also use colored labels instead of numbers if you want to brighten up your unit.

Write the number clearly on the box itself and write the contents of the box on your list.  It can be as detailed as:

  • Box 1
    • Toaster
    • 4 Blue Plates
    • 2 Serving Bowls

Or you can keep it simple:

  • Green Box
    • Kitchen Stuff

Keep a copy of the list at home and post a copy inside your storage unit (or keep the list on your smartphone).  Update your list as you add things or take them away.

Now when you visit your self-storage unit you can grab what you need quickly and get on with your day.

10 Essential Boat Storage Tips

As the weather gets colder it’s time to winterize your boat and make plans for storage.  Dry-storage is the best choice, especially if you live in a colder climate.  Remember these important boat storage tips:

  1. Check your boat for crack and dings.  Repair any issues before you put the boat into storage or you may face bigger problems in the spring.
  2. Give the boat a good cleaning and leave doors and storage compartments open to allow airflow.  This will help avoid weird smells when you open up the boat next spring.
  3. Top off the gas tank and change your boat’s oil before you store it for the winter.
  4. Disconnect all batteries and store them separately in a place where the temperature won’t drop below freezing.
  5. Remove any detachable or personal items from your boat.
  6. Copy down your boat’s registration number and expiration date.  Make yourself a reminder to renew the registration before it expires.
  7. Take some pictures of the boat, including one that shows the registration number.  Having documentation of the condition of the boat when it goes into storage can help with future insurance claims in case of damage.
  8. Make sure the hull of your boat is well supported to avoid cracking and alignment issues.
  9. Always cover your boat.  The cover should fit tightly.
  10. Check your boat’s manual for any specific steps recommended for your boat.
